What I’m shopping right now: Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day certainly feels a bit different this year, to say the least. In the past, MDW always signified the start of summer, and the turning point into the end of the school year. And while those things are still true, there’s something less exciting about the uncertainty of where we are right now, especially in NYC.

My family has a house on the Jersey shore, and MDW is almost always the first weekend we open it up and come together as a family. This house is really the only family home I have known my whole life, as I moved around a lot growing up. While I will be heading down the shore this weekend, and seeing my parents for the first time since February, the idea of doing it all with masks and without friends just feels a bit odd. But if we are safe, healthy and stable, then we are lucky.

On the bright side, MDW is also a big shopping weekend. Not just because of the sales (SO MANY SALES- sadly, most are pretty insane because of the economy, but if you’re able to, it’s a great time to support your favorite stores), but also because we can finally look forward to warmer weather and some fresh wardrobe picks for summer.

I love summer. It is my favorite season mostly because I do not have to wear shoes. I grew up as a swimmer and I’m a water sign, so being in a bathing suit on the beach is my natural habitat. Despite years of being self-conscious about my body, for some reason, being in a bathing suit never felt like an issue for me. I always just felt free. Maybe with less restriction, there’s less to worry about? Or maybe I’m just most content and at ease on the beach.

Either way, I love summer clothes and swimsuits. I bought a few things before a big vacation Chris and I took to Antigua before lockdown started (it feels like a million years ago now), but I am always looking to build my summer staples. Two weeks ago, I did some spring cleaning to make room for a few new arrivals.
