The Weekly

Pretty Busy Weekly, 5.25.20

After a lot of debate, we decided to go down to our shore house for the holiday weekend. It’s the first time I have seen my family since February, and wow, it feels good to feel some sense of normalcy.

Weekends at the shore are part of my identity, but this summer is likely going to be a bit different. Chris and I plan to come down for longer periods of time to make sure we are safe about travel between the city and shore. We are also probably the only people who are wearing masks everywhere down here, but we are sticking to it, especially coming from Brooklyn. I am loving these masks I ordered from Etsy.

With the changes, it means Chris will be working from home down here, so we have spent the weekend cleaning out furniture to set up a home office for him. I’ll be finishing up my Master’s degree that I’ve been working on for over a year, and I cannot wait to complete it.

I also cannot believe that we are almost at the end of the school year. I never could have imagined this is how I’d be wrapping up the year, but even though I am bummed, I know it’s so much worse for my students who have worked their butts off for this moment.

Keeping it real for you all, it took me three hours, tech support, and a lot of Googling to figure out how to create this small subscription box. Blogging isn’t as glamorous as it appears, and this has been a great lesson in humility for sure.

This week was so exciting, as I finally launched Pretty Busy. It has taken a couple of weeks of hard work, and a lot of learning through Google, but ultimately, it’s been so rewarding. There’s nothing better than a reminder of how loved and supported you are by your friends and family.

This weekend, I’ve been trying to maintain the solid workout routine I have built during lock-down. I am missing my Peloton spin classes, but have been loving the strength classes with Robin and Jess Sims, both of who have some pretty fire playlists to light a fire under your butt. I loved Jess’ 30 min. full body live from home on 5.9.

In an effort to get rid of gray hairs, I attempted my first at home gloss from dp Hue after being inspired by Somwherelately’s amazing home dye job. I used the medium brown, and left it on for double the time recommended, mostly sticking to my roots to avoid my balayage. My thoughts? Eh. It lifted the mousy brown color, but the gray coverage is lacking. I would need to try the auburn color mixed with dark brown next time.

Filed under things I have been addicted to, Chris bought a big variety pack of Jolly Ranchers from Amazon, and now I eat at least two pineapple candies a day. Thanks for that…I’ll be sure to show him the bill for my future cavities.

Vaca frita, tostones, and black beans and rice.

Looking for dinner inspo? I highly recommend Primal Gourmet’s vaca frita recipe. If you’ve never had this classic Cuban dish, it’s a shredded flank steak that gets crispy and salty. Served over rice and beans, or with a side of tostones, this is probably going to be a new favorite. I also just pre-ordered his new cookbook– so pumped! Highly recommend for his playlists and hearty paleo staples.

If you’re in need of a new show, I’ve got two that I binged this week. I did not enjoy/finish Sally Rooney’s Normal People, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Hulu’s rendition of it. I watched this in two nights, and thought the two main actors were brilliant.

I also recommend Mindy Kailing’s new Netflix show, Never Have I Ever. I laughed, I cried, I cringed- all the signs of a successful teen dramedy that tells the story of a young (awkward) high school student who recently lost her father and recently regained the feeling of her legs. Desperately pining over the most popular boy in school, acknowledging her different Indian values, and navigating her relationship with mom (this was certainly a painful trip down my own memory lane), this show really delivered.

What are the highlights of your week? Let me know what’s giving you life as we continue into week 11 of this new normal. I hope you enjoyed a peaceful holiday weekend, and a special thank you to our armed forces, including my brother-in-law, on this Memorial Day Weekend.
