The Skincare Series: brands you should invest in – TATCHA
More and more companies are creating affordable skincare lines. Sephora’s own clean beauty brand, with most products under $20. And The Ordinary has created a line providing us with many options under $10.
But a lot of the beauty and skincare industry still has has a high price point. And for many products, the truth is, you get what you pay for. What you invest in your skin is what you will get out. And I have invested a lot in mine.
So how do you know what’s worth it when it comes to skincare? No one wants to spend $60 on a product they haven’t tried and aren’t sure will deliver on what it promises.
Your best bet is to find skincare lines that you can trust- the brands that sell products that work for you, over and over again. Once you know you can trust a brand, then you are more willing to take a risk and try one of their new products.
I’ve tested A LOT of skincare over the years. As someone who suffered from adult acne up until last year, I have a lot of scarring on my skin. Your skin is your more visible feature; investing in it is just as important as buying a great dress, even if doesn’t feel like you’re getting as much for it. But good skincare should show results that last even longer.
In the Skincare Series, I’ve rounded up the best skincare brands that I have tested throughout the years. These are my tried and true, and I would be eager to try or recommend any product from these lines. While they come with a bigger price tag, they have results that are worth the money.
This week’s featured brand to invest in is TATCHA. A little bit about the brand: it’s a Japanese-inspired, female-owned brand. They focus on a more holistic approach to beauty, and incorporate eastern elements into their ingredients. In addition, they have an open commitment to following Japanese beauty and safety standards, which are one of the highest in the world (if you’re wondering where the U.S. stands in that ranking, it’s not great…).
I also really love TATCHA because they give back, and each product donates a portion to female education in Africa and Asia, a cause that really speaks to me because of my work.
The way I found this brand is actually a bit of a funny story. As mentioned, last year I was doing a round of Accutane, which is a very powerful acne medication. It dries out your skin completely, and it is ultra sensitive. Well, I was in the first few weeks, and I thought it would be okay to wax my own upper lip and chin before a big event with my in-laws.
Turns out, that was a really stupid idea. Because I ripped my skin off in both areas, leaving me with red, crusty zebra strips on my face. All of this had to be healed and tamed within 24 hours of a gala event. So I got brave, and I went to Sephora to ask for help.
They gave me a free sample of the TATCHA Indigo Cream, and I was hooked after that. This is the cream of the gods; it soothed my skin, brought the redness down, and began healing the burns overnight. I immediately went out and bought the $85 full-size cream, and used it for the remainder of the time I was on Accutane.
Since then, I have tried tons of TATCHA products. It’s probably my most loved skincare brand, and everything I buy has proved well-worth the money. Here are a couple of my favorites (I have purchased and used all of these products) from the line.
- The Dewy Skin Cream ($68) – this cream is a perfect all-purpose cream that has a consistency that can work for day or night-time routines. It is hydrating without being oily, and really melts into the skin. I have bought this cream multiple times.
- The Indigo Cream ($85) – Worth. Every. Penny. This cream is perfect for very dry and sensitive skin. I would particularly recommend it if you suffer from eczema on your face or neck, like I do. It is a cure-all, and has super soothing ingredients that bring your skin back to balance, and has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.
- The Deep Cleanse ($38) – I really love this cleanser as a second cleanse option following a balm. It’s lightweight but hydrating, and doesn’t leave me with that residue cream feeling that a lot of gel cleansers give me. It even has some light exfoliators in it that give you fresh skin.
- The Violet-C Radiance Mask ($68) – I tried this mask in a sample I got, and it really delivered. This is TATCHA’s take on a Vitamin C and AHA mask, meant to give you a brighter glow and eliminate dark spots, and dead skin. In comparison to many masks in the same category, this is a great price!
- Ageless Revitalizing Neck Cream ($110) – Filed under things I didn’t know: you need neck cream. I know the sticker price on this one might have your jaw on the floor, but it has lasted me for a few months. It’s the perfect amount of hydration, and really firms your skin overnight. Reminder- always swipe up on your neck. This cream is also available on qvc.com, where you can buy it on EasyPay for monthly installments.
- Rice Polish, Gentle ($65) – If you missed my skin routine basics, you should be exfoliating as part of your AM + PM routines. And this is my favorite option for doing just that. Because I have sensitive skin, I use the gentle version, but there are 3 other intensities that you can select. This sand-like rice foams with water and creates a gentle lather on your skin that leaves your skin shiny. It lasts forever!
- Silk Canvas Primer ($52) – I am not a huge makeup primer fan (good skincare should be your base), but this is the only one I have found and liked. It’s so lightweight, and your makeup applies so smoothly over the top. It prevents creasing and evens skin texture. Perfect around the eyes and nose! They also just released a liquid version of this that has rave reviews. I’m planning to try that next.
TATACHA offers an incredible range of products, and really caters to various skin types. If you have sensitive skin like me, I cannot say enough positive things about this brand. Invest!
You can also find almost all of TATCHA’s skincare products on EasyPay installments on QVC, which spans a breakdown of payments over the lifespan of the product pretty closely, in my experience. If you order auto-delivery from TATCHA, you can save 10% on their products. This is a great option for when you find something you really like in this line.
