Why I love my GloPro

I wanted to write this post for a while now, and I truthfully have no idea why it’s taken me so long. Because when I think about products or tools that have changed my skin and really worked, my GloPro is one of the first things that comes to mind. It’s an expensive tool that certainly has more affordable drug store microneedling alternatives (I’ve even found these rollers at Homegoods, in a past life where that was a thing); however, I haven’t seen the same quality results with those that I have with the real deal.

But let’s start with the basics- what is this thing? A GloPro is an at-home microneedling device that incorporates red light therapy in addition to micro-currents. Basically, it’s a device with a spikey roller head that uses a red light and kind of buzzes when you turn it on. These little spikes (they are teeny tiny metal needles) puncture the surface layer of your skin and creates a pathway for all of the really expensive products you use to go beneath the surface layer. And that is why this tool it worth the money- because it makes all of your other products that much more valuable when they are able to sink deeper into your skin.

The red light and the slight vibration of the tool make it more potent than any other tools I have tried (and for sure better than the Homegoods version I had). The combination essentially stimulates the skin at a greater level, which helps create more cell reproduction, which is what we are looking for when we use anti-aging or exfoliating products in the first place. The added benefit here is that those products will have a greater impact with the GloPro, because they are going beneath the surface of the skin.

The first thing Chris asked when he saw me use this tool was, “Doesn’t that hurt?” And I will tell you, it’s not a comfortable sensation. However, I would never qualify it as painful by any means. It’s more like if you were scratching your arm- it doesn’t feel good, but it doesn’t hurt- does that make sense? These little needles skim over your face, and they are like little pricks on the skin. Your face may be a little bit red after you finish, but this is normal when you use anything that exfoliates the surface of your skin.

The recommended way to use this tool is by diving your face into four quadrants- your forehead, your mouth and chin, and each of your cheeks / cheekbones / orbital area. You want to spend about 60 seconds on each area; I often watch TV while I do this. Roll the head of the device horizontally across the area, then vertically, and then diagonally in each direction. Pro tip- do not drag the tool at the end of the roll- pick it up and place it in the next spot you are rolling, or else you risk damaging your skin. And be religious about cleaning it! Spray it with alcohol after each use so you aren’t spreading bacteria when you use it or you will do more harm than good when it comes to acne.

At the end, I focus a little bit more time around my laugh lines, my neck, and I use a separate attachment to get the more narrow areas around my eyes. In total, I would say this takes me about 6 minutes, so it’s not something I do every night. But the key to this tool, like most, is consistency. The more you do it on a regular basis, the better results you will see. My goal is always at least 3 times a week, and I would never use it in addition to any acid-based masks, which already targets various layers of the skin. There are various attachments you can also purchase for the wand; I have used the regular roller, the body roller, and the eye attachment. The first and the last I have had the best results with, because I them most regularly.

The biggest result I’ve noticed from using this tool is dealing with hyperpigmentation and scarring, the texture of my skin, and the elasticity. The key is to use your GloPro, and then follow it up with an alternating set of quality products, many of which you probably have in your arsenal. This tool simply makes them even more effective and really lets the product work. You can totally pair this with a retinol product (which I do), but there are two products I have found it works best with – the Farmacy Honeymoon Glow and the PCA Skin ExLinea Peptide Smoothing Serum.

I’ve talked all about my love of acids and chemical exfoliators in this post, and the best part of these products is that they are already getting beneath the first surface of the skin. Combined with the GloPro, you will see even better results (you can see how the texture and pigment of my skin changed here). There are a lot of great acid-based products on the market- Farmacy’s is just what I have in my repertoire right now.

The second product is new to me over the last few months. It’s said to be “Botox in a bottle,” and so I was easily persuaded to buy this smoothing serum from PCA Skin. And while it’s great on it’s own (I haven’t had Botox so I can’t actually compare it to that), it’s so good combined with the GloPro. Not only has it helped tremendously with smoothing some of the lines I have on my forehead, between my brows, and around my eyes, but the best result when I use this with my GloPro is that I wake up in the morning with that tight, bouncy skin. It has greatly improved my skin’s elasticity, and again, this one is better the more you use it.

I do have the eye attachment for the GloPro, which I recently bought. You just swap the heads out, similar to a razor blade, and I do about an extra minute per eye, going in each direction. I have also started using this on my eyebrows, as I am currently using an eyebrow growth serum. It helps stimulate the same turnover that increases collagen and hair growth, and allows the serum to sink deeper to really work. I love it with this Beautycounter Countertime eye cream, and in combination with the Revitalash Cosmetics eyebrow conditioner. The results are really incredible- you will notice a difference when you wake up in the morning looking refreshed.

If you have sensitive or dry skin, don’t worry- me too! But this product has not increased any of those issues for me. The best tip is to make sure you layer on hydration after – not only does this help keep skin calm, but it’s going to help keep your skin hydrated so it doesn’t become flaky or accumulate dead skin cells. I love this overnight moisturizer from Elemis (I linked a great deal on a set from QVC below), because it has the same target effects as the GloPro, followed up with this gorgeous facial oil from Farmacy. You really get a good, healthy glow going that’s all hydration.

Bottomline, this tool is worth the money, and I would buy it again. In-office microneedling treatments cost hundreds of dollars, and while, yes, they will always be more effective when done at a professional and medical grade, this easy at-home treatment has already given me significant benefits for less than half the cost of one of those treatments. I bought my GloPro at QVC, and it’s currently on sale at HSN. There are lots of bells and whistles attachments, but for me, the eye attachment is where it’s at if you’re going to get one. All you need is this tool, the great skincare routine you probably already have, and a few minutes. Results will be there instantly, and they get better over time.
